If you run a webshop, you know that there is a lot involved. A good product, a well-organized website, and a reliable delivery service are the foundation. But there is one element that many webshop owners underestimate: the packaging. Yet, the box or envelope in which your product arrives is the first thing the customer sees of your company. And that first impression counts.
A customer who orders something via a webshop has no shopping experience. There is no shop window, no salesperson offering advice, and no furnished interior. What the customer *does* experience, however, is the moment of unpacking. That moment partly determines how he or she feels about your webshop.
A box that is closed crookedly, full of empty space, or already creased upon arrival gives a poor impression. A tightly closed package that fits perfectly and is neatly finished gives a professional feel. That may seem like a detail, but that is precisely where the difference lies.
Research into unboxing experiences consistently reveals the same pattern. Customers who receive a well-presented package are more likely to share it on social media and leave positive reviews. A damaged or half-empty box has the opposite effect, even if the product itself is in perfect order. Packaging is therefore not an afterthought, but an integral part of the product itself.
The most common mistake when shipping is using a box that is too large for the contents. That seems safe, but it has a few disadvantages.
You need more packing material to keep the contents in place.
The risk of shifting and damage during transport is greater.
Carriers also charge based on volume, so a larger box costs more.
A box that better suits the contents saves costs and looks more professional to the customer. For webshops that consistently ship the same product, it is therefore smart to look for a box specifically tailored to that product.
The material of the box also plays a role. Single-wall corrugated cardboard is suitable for light products such as clothing or books. Double-wall corrugated cardboard offers more sturdiness and is intended for heavier or fragile items, such as kitchenware or electronics. Anyone who ships internationally regularly would do well to choose a sturdier cardboard, simply because packages are reloaded more frequently and therefore subjected to more impact.
Not every webshop needs custom boxes. If you sell a wide and changing assortment, you are better off working with a few standard sizes that cover most products. If you ship one or a few fixed products in large quantities, customization often pays off quickly.
The benefits at a glance:
The box fits perfectly, no unnecessary empty space.
Minder vulmateriaal nodig
In addition to the box itself, the finishing also determines how professional a package appears. A crooked shipping label, an old sticker still attached from a previous shipment, or a crumpled tag are noticeable faster than you think. A neatly placed label clearly displaying the customer's details immediately creates a polished impression, even before the box is opened.
Some webshops go a step further and add a small token of appreciation, such as a thank-you card or a sticker with the logo. This doesn't have to be expensive, but it does contribute to a brand experience that goes beyond just the product.
Packaging is a part of your webshop that directly influences the customer experience. A good choice of box, filling material, and closure not only results in fewer damaged products but also in satisfied customers who return. Start small when you are just starting out, but remember to optimize your packaging process as you grow. It pays off, both in lower shipping costs and in a stronger first point of contact with your customer.
